Amebic Liver Abscess Amenable to Surgical Drainage
Abstract
13 patients with amebic liver abscess had operative drainage over a five-year period at Ewha Womans University Hospital: all were male and low-soscioeconomic, most were solitary in the right lobe of the liver. Eight patients underwent operative drainage of the abscess owing to incorrect diagnosis (three), impending rupture (two), persistent pain and fever after medical treatment (three), and secondary infection (one). But four patients had no reasonable operative indications. Medical treatment of the liver abscess with amebicidal drugs and aspiration should be performed before operative drainage.
